Sam Taylor on his special modified pontoon boat called River Rat. His dog “River” travels with him all the time. I met Sam at Pebble Isle on Kentucky Lake and he cooked dinner at Demopolis while waiting out the pains from Tropical Storm Ida. His boat is at Homeport Marina while he spends Christmas in Fort Lauderdale and New Years in Seattle Washington. He does get around. We have kept in contact and will meet up again.
Adele Arlitt- A special lady I met at Demopolis Marina. She is a licensed captain and is heading to Guatemala on her sail boat “Rose Bud” with her dog Po-Go. That is a long ways.
These were taken at Demopolis Marina.
This is Gill Hummer. Gill has his boat pulled out on dry dock at Demopolis and is redoing the boat for another long trip someplace. Gill took approximately 6 yeas and sailed around the world. Someplace on an island the locals got ahold of hos dog and ate it. He cooked the turkey for Thanksgiving dinner. Very interesting man. You can read more about his trips and him by doing a Google search- Gill Hummer
Tug boats trying to get diesel at the same time at Demopolis Dock. They can take up to 3,000 or more gallons.

Coffeeville Lock and Dam- Last lock on the Tenn-Tom Waterway.
Pictures along the Tenn-Tom Waterway heading south to Mobile.
Tug all bundled up against the cold going down the Tenn Tom River to Mobile.
The couple on the left are doing the Great Loop and Tod on “Life 2 Short” is heading south to warmer weather. They were anchored for the night. We rafted to them for a while then went back up the creek to anchor with a couple of sailboats we met at Demopolis.
Anchored out the night before we got to Mobile Bay. Rafted up with Bob and Aidele. Everyone had anchor out and tied all 4 boats together.
This is going through Mobile, heading to Dog River Marina, south of Mobile. It was a Sunday and very few boats moving around. We were glad of that.
My boat in slip at Dog River Marina. Fixed docks sure are high when tide is out. I can now act like a monkey climbing in and out of boat.
When you have to work on the top of the mast on a sailboat this is what it looks like. I ask him when he come down, that looks scary? He said it’s easy in a marina, out in the the Gulf or Ocean is scary.
Fog on Mobile Bay
Pictures of boats in Dog River Marina in Mobile.
While at Dog River Marina, replicas of the Nina and Pinta boats came in to have their mast raised. They are heading to Pensacola for a show.
At the marina dock behind Lu-Lu’s on Intercoastal after crossing Mobile Bay. At $43 a night you would think the slip would come with a pretty lady and a cooler of orange juice or at least and orange juice.
Pictures of LuLu’s. Jimmy Buffett’s sister owns this place.
Pictures along the Intercoastal after LuLu’s and before Fort Walton.
In slip at Fort Walton, with tarp on waiting for rain and wind. This pelican watched me the whole time, probably thinking what a goof ball this guy is.
This peacock was sitting in the boat across the dock from me. He looked at me as if to say, “You like my 35’ boat.” That night this boat sank.
Tug’s boat with tent up, ready for the rain.
This is a cement hull houseboat that people still live on. But it stays in the marina, at Fort Walton.
Fort Walton Marina, Christmas Eve a storm came in. Rain and wind gusts up to 40-50 mph. I was prepared, but water was breaking over the dock and almost made me seasick. The next morning I got out of the boat and looked across the dock. The boat that the peacock was standing in had sunk and was sitting in the bottom. It was hard to believe but as people came by to look, it was no big deal. Numerous ones said that happens every now and then.
Christmas Day-2009. This is the cottage Tug’s parents had on the Gulf of Mexico. Pictures of Tug, his parents, Mike and Penny, and Karen, a friend from Tug’s college days in Iowa. Thanks again Mike and Penny for a great day.
Pictures on Intercoastal Waterway between Panama City and Apalachicola, Florida.
Scipio Creek Marina, Apalachicola Florida. This pelican was standing on the dock right beside my boat. I tried to feed it Pringles and some crackers. It could not pick up the food off the dock and I could not throw Pringles straight. When I went to get on the dock to clean up the mess, the pelican lunged at me with his mouth open. Yes I did flinch back in the boat. Got my boat hook out and was able to clean the Pringles and crackers off the dock. The pelican walked on down the dock probably thinking that guy can’t take a joke.
This picture was taken by Linda Albrecht in Scipio Creek Marina. Linda and her husband have a home on the Gulf of Mexico at Mexico Beach about an hour west of here. They drove down and took me to the grocery/drug store. Then bought me lunch at a nice restaurant in downtown Apalachicola. I had a great time with them. Al and Linda, thanks for sharing your day with me.
New Year Day-Main Street- Apalachicola, Florida. I was walking downtown on New Years Day and went by a small store front. There was one barber chair in it and a gentleman reading a paper. I opened the door and asked if he would be open Monday/Tuesday next week. He said no, only open on Fridays and Saturdays til noon. I asked are you giving haircuts on New Years Day? Yes was the answer so I got a haircut on New Years Day. His name is Lawrence Scarabin and he as been cutting hair in this same building for 48 years. The rest of the week, Monday through Thursday, he and his wife are crab fishing.
Pictures of fishing boats, restaurants and downtown Apalachicola, Florida.
Scipio Creek Marina. These are pictures of the men’s “boaters in transit” bathroom. When you get a slip at a marina they give you a key to the bathroom/shower house for your use during your stay. Nothing wrong with the camera, that is the color of the bathroom. they rate movies, restaurants, why not rate “boaters in transit” bathrooms. Most use a 1 star/5 star rating system. I will use the pelican system 1-10. This bathroom gets a 7 pelican rating.
I have never walked this much in my life except for the military. I would get new tennis shoes when they got dirty, not worn out. But it looks like these are wearing out, or I bought really cheap tennis shoes. The next 2nd hand shop or Goodwill store I come across I will look for a high quality pair to buy.
Looks like you are having a good time and meeting a lot of great people.I hope the weather straightens out a little.Pictures are great.Lots to see.Have a good winter. john Peifer
